As is the case in any agricultural or horticultural venture, the starting
point for a great tasting end product is always in the soil in which it’s grown. This is
true whether you are a vegetable grower in Lincolnshire, a fruit
grower in Spain or a wine grower in California.

However, few agricultural growing activities are quite as complex as those in winemaking.
Although it could be said that at the end of the process, the enjoyment in drinking a refreshing glass of Californian Pinot Grigio is much more satisfying than a basic vegetable or piece of fruit.

Within wine making there are so many variables that play a part
and affect the quality of the final bottle of wine, including the choice of grape variety, soil preparation, sunlight control,
fermentation management. Even whether the grower users a
cork or screw top used all play important parts in producing a
good bottle of wine.

The correct term used for a group of vineyards is a ‘terroir’
and most wines in the same terroir with the same
type of soil, weather conditions; grape variety etc will produce final bottles of wine with similar characteristics.

In some cases, the best wine producing soils are to be found
in areas where few other crops would even be considered worth planting.
In many cases there can be too much nitrogen in the soil which causes excessive
leaf growth, although too little nitrogen produces unwanted amounts of sulphites.
Inadequate potassium levels make plants weak in defending against disease and yields grapes low in sugar.

Like any agricultural effort, good grape production depends on weather
conditions which unfortunately are outside the winegrower’s control.
Plentiful sunshine is needed, but the best grapes grow in climates
where the seasonal temperature varies within a 30F (16.7C)
degree range which makes California a great area for winemaking.

In the past, Californian wines have been accused of having too little acid due to the large amounts of sunshine, however, the skills of the winegrowers, honed
over several generations now are producing great red wines including Merlot
with a good balance of acidity.

Vines need access to consistent but not excessive amounts of water.

Too much and the growth of mould, mildew and other diseases becomes unmanageable.
A moderate amount causes the growth of deep roots
that absorb the needed amount of complex minerals. Access to water
is a constant struggle for winegrowers in California where complex
irrigation systems have been set up by many of the state’s winegrowers

Many winegrowers in different areas of the world where grapes are grown far inland spend much effort in controlling pests
and disease, until harvest around early October.
However, areas along the coast such as the 800 mile coastline in California
means that the grape varieties grown here such a Pinot Grigio, Grenache and Merlot enjoy the natural
and cleansing winds from the ocean which assist growers and reduce the amount of artificial pest
control needed.

All great products start from square one and Californian red wines
are the same, buy wine online today and get some great deals.

The singer, whose hits include Bad Romance, Born This Way, Just Dance and Poker Face, is headed back to her pop persona
following the September release of her album Harlequin, which
was inspired by her film, Joker: Folie à Deux.

Among the tracks on the album included two new songs,
and standards such as That’s Entertainment,
That’s Life and Get Happy.

Like the film, it was not an initial commercial success, marking her
lowest ever entry for a full-length record on the Billboard 200 charts at number 20.

Joker: Folie à Deux saw Lady Gaga play Harley Quinn opposite Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker, who earned the Best Actor
Oscar for his performance in the franchise’s 2019 film

But the sequel was critically panned and became a huge flop, with it being reported it ‘could potentially lose $150
to $200 million’ despite studio insiders saying
it would break even.

LONDON, Sept 28 (Reuters) — Philip Morris International (PMI) on Thursday signalled a slower than anticipated U.S.

roll out of its IQOS heated tobacco device, a choice analysts said was positive for its competitors in the
short term.

The New York-listed Marlboro maker also said it aims for more
than two thirds of its net revenues to come from «smoke-free» products by 2030, up from 50%
in 2025, as it tries to transform its image from a cigarette purveyor to a driver of
the shift to healthier alternatives.

Investors have been closely watching IQOS’ entry into the U.S., the world’s largest market
for nicotine products, and had been expecting it from May 2024 next
year. Reuters reported on Wednesday that PMI is hiring lobbyists across a host of key U.S.

states ahead of the launch.

Chief Executive Jacek Olczak said IQOS would launch in four cities in two unnamed
U.S. states from 2024, but a national launch would only come after PMI receives approval to sell
the latest version, known as IQOS ILUMA.

The company was planning to apply for approval in October and expected it from
2025, he continued.

«We need to warm up the tyres,» he said of the initial launch, which would help
PMI fine tune its approach.

A national roll-out of ILUMA would follow but in phases, he continued, adding launching in 10 states in the
first year would make sense.

Meaningful traction for PMI’s heated tobacco products
in the U.S. «now looks delayed until ILUMA,» Owen Bennett, equity analyst at Jefferies,
said in a note, adding this was a positive for PMI’s rivals.

Olczak also signalled that PMI’s push into non-nicotine products
was no longer a priority. It recently scrapped
an ambition for $1 billion in net revenues to come from sales of such products by 2025.

Instead, PMI will focus its resources on IQOS and nicotine pouch brand ZYN, Olczak said,
adding it had been too optimistic around acceptance of big tobacco companies operating
outside of nicotine.

PMI also announced updated medium-term targets including for revenue and earnings per share, and
ambitious volume targets for IQOS and ZYN.

ZYN and other oral nicotine products in the U.S. would help drive
an expected $2 billion in revenues there in 2024, even before IQOS ILUMA, executives said.

PMI shares were up 1.5% on Thursday. (Reporting by Emma Rumney in London and Granth Vanaik in Bengaluru; additional reporting by Ananya Mariam Rajesh in Bengaluru; Writing by Emma Rumney; Editing

A Detective Sergeant allegedly sexually assaulted three female
colleagues and told one he ‘wasn’t getting any because his wife was pregnant’, a court has heard.

Liverpool Crown Court heard one of Richard Mills’ alleged victims claim that he molested her on three separate occasions as she
described him as ‘a dirty pervert’.

The woman claimed that the serving Greater Manchester
Police detective put her hand on his trousers over his erect penis while she was driving
him, and alleged that he had been talking about a lack of intimacy with his pregnant wife.

It is alleged that he also put his hands on her breasts
and smacked her bum on two other occasions.

A second woman has claimed that Mills, 41, put her hand on his
penis over his clothing, while a third woman alleges that he stroked her right leg from her thigh
to her ankle while sitting in a car together during work hours.

Mills, of Oakley Way, Wardle, Rochdale, denies five offences
of sexual assault.

Robert Dudley, prosecuting, told the jury the offences allegedly took place between 2014 and the summer of 2022.

The court heard that the first woman made an internal police complaint in 2016 but did not pursue it because it had been instilled in her when she joined
the force that ‘you don’t make complaints against bobbies’.

Richard Mills, of Oakley Way, Wardle, Rochdale, denies
five offences of sexual assault

She renewed her complaint in December 2020.

In the first alleged incident, it was claimed that Mills came behind her when she was sitting at her desk and put both his hands on her breasts over her
clothing.

‘He only touched her for seconds because she shrugged the defendant off her, but that was
deliberate, intentional touching of a sexual nature without consent,’ said Mr Dudley told
the court.

A colleague who witnessed the alleged incident told their sergeant
but, when asked about it later, the woman said ‘to leave and that she would deal with it’.

The second alleged offence occurred when she was driving to see a colleague with
Mills. Her video recorded police interview was played to the jury, in which she claims Mills was ‘telling me what
sexual things he liked and how he liked to have sex.

‘He said he was not getting it because his wife was pregnant’, she
claimed.

She said she did not respond to what he said, and alleged that he then ‘took my hand off the gear stick and put
it on his penis’.

She said she put her hand back on the steering wheel and said ‘f*** off
Rick’.

The court heard that she went in to see her colleague, who was
off work with stress at the time, who commented that she looked ‘as white as
a sheet’.

When she told her colleague what had allegedly happened, she was advised to tell her
sergeant.

She did so, but again was advised that the issue would be dealt with by her supervisor.

The court heard that the alleged third incident involving the same woman happened when she was
making a cup of tea at work.

She claimed that Mills came up behind her and slapped her on the bottom, which she relayed to the rest of
her team.

The case is being heard in front of a jury at Liverpool Crown Court (pictured)

The woman alleged that Mills frequently made sexual innuendos but that she and others ‘did not
entertain him, we didn’t enter into conversation’.

‘Even though he was a strong character he was very immature’, she said.

Mills was interviewed about the allegation in October 2021 and, in a prepared statement,
he said he did not accept that he was guilty
of any criminal offence and had not touched the woman in a sexual manner.

Mr Dudley told the court that the second alleged
victim claimed that Mills sexually assaulted her when they were together on a leadership course.

She claimed that Mills was complaining that the
course was boring, and that he began telling her that she looked nice
and that he was turned on.

‘She said that there came a point where he picked up her
left hand and placed it on his crotch area and
then pressed it down onto his penis for five to 10 seconds —
she said that it felt hard’, Mr Dudley told the court.

She said she did not want to draw attention to what was allegedly happening, but said she did pull her hand away and tucked
it between her crossed legs.

The court heard that Mills allegedly asked her sexually explicit questions
as they drove back to Manchester, including ‘who was the oldest person she had slept with’ and ‘would you ever
have sex in a car or at work?’.

She also claimed that he had previously brushed up against
her.

The third complainant claimed that Mills stroked her from ‘the inside of her right leg down to her ankle’.

The woman claimed that she was holding a cardboard tray with drinks in it
on her lap in a car after she and Mills had gone to get a Friday night takeaway for themselves and their colleagues.

‘The defendant said that her legs and bum looked nice’, Mr Dudley told the court.
‘He reached over and put his hand on her thigh, then he stroked over her tights from the inside of her right leg down to her ankle.

‘She was worried about spilling the drinks so she did
nothing about it’.

It was some time later that she reported the alleged incident to her supervisor.

Mills was subsequently interviewed about the two alleged
incident and he denied sexually assaulting them.

The case continues.
